'Tango in Mayfair' and 'Cockney Dance in Stepney'

In Act I of "Half-way up the Mountain" we meet the two teams of girls taking part in the quest to find the Five Talismen. First the Mayfair Girls sing their chorus number 'Tango in Mayfair' and this is followed by the Stepney Girls singing their 'Cockney Dance in Stepney'.

"Half-way up the Mountain" or "The Five Talismen" is a Musical Story of a quest in the Silver Jubilee Year of 1935 by Peter Cork.

It was performed by the pupils and staff of Clapham County School in July 1976.

The discovery of a concert programme and a reel-to-reel monophonic tape recording of 'A Concert of Music by Peter Cork', given at Walsingham School on Friday, 15th July 1977 at 7:30pm, provides us with an opportunity to listen to Peter Cork introducing the two numbers and then the two numbers themselves.

The Mayfair Girls were played by Maureen Russell, Naomi Dixon, Ceri Roblin, Jacqueline Bubb, Tamora Heath, Katherine Gould and Diane Brown.

The Stepney Girls were played by Dixie Tanner, Jenny Fargie, Sandra Hayward, Marsha Callender, Moira Stenhouse, Karen Warren and Susan Gregory.

The Walsingham School Orchestra was conducted by Peter Cork in this recording.
